Art was the son of Charles and Rosa (Grindol) Worthington. He graduated from Berryton High School and Kansas State University. He was a veteran of World War II in the Pacific Theater in the US Army. He married Leatha Walter on August 2, 1946, in Stull, Kansas.

Survivors include his wife, his children, Galen Worthington, Jeanne Worthington, Joanne Gofreed, and Shirley Desch, his siblings, Eugene Worthington, Ted Worthington, and Maxine Combs, and seven grandchildren.

Services were held at the Shawnee Heights United Methodist Church east of Topeka. Private burial was in Stull Cemetery.
