She was the daughter of the late Henry and Louisa Allen, of Neath Abbey, Glamorgan, Wales. In the 1891 census she was 22 and a governess in Hailsham, Sussex. In the 1901 census she was a school teacher living in Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire, with her widowed mother, aunt and two sisters, Lisa and Enid. In the 1911 census she was a shorthand typist and book keeper in a solicitors' office and the family were living in Dulwich, South London.
Ethel Louisa Allen of 171 Rosendale Road, West Dulwich, spinster, died at 171 Rosendale Road leaving effects of £5,342 17s 11d. The Executor of her Will was her younger sister, Enid Gladys Pomeroy Allen, spinster.
She was cremated at South Metropolitan Cemetery (West Norwood) on the 27th June 1944. Her ashes were scattered over her parents' grave.
