AIR FORCE VETERAN
KOREA

Bernard E. Schliesman, 89 died suddenly Friday at his home. He was a month shy of celebrating his 90th birthday, and a week away from a double 90th birthday celebration with his bride of 66 years, Teresa.

The following excerpt is taken from Bern's The History of the Family of Mabelle and Paul Schliesman Ancestors and Descendents:

Bern was born in St. Bernard's Hospital in Milbank, SD on November 5, 1932. Although the family was living in Corona, SD at the time, he was the first of the family to be born in a hospital.

In June 1937, the family moved to Wilmot, SD where Bern completed his twelve years of education, graduation from high school in 1950. For one and half years he worked for an electrician during the day and his Dad at night in the lumber yard. In January 1952, he enlisted in the US Air Force serving in Texas, Colorado, Virginia, Korea, then back to Virginia. While in Korea, Bern flew twenty-one combat missions in a B-26 Bomber. After Korea, in September of 1953 he came home to Wilmot on leave and met the lovely and talented Teresa Blank. After wining and dining her for 3 weeks, he went east to Virginia, and she went west to California. Bern made several trips to California in the following months to convince her to return to SD. It must have worked because in June of 1956 they were married in Sacred Heart Church in Aberdeen, SD.

The young couple moved to Whapeton, ND, she to teach in the public schools and he to attend the North Dakota College of Science. After Bern graduated in 1958, they moved to Fargo, ND where he began a career in electronics with the Burroughs Corp. and Teresa began a career of motherhood. After six years and four children, they moved to Williston, ND. Their tragedy in life occurred while living there when their oldest son died in 1965 and their joy in life occurred with the addition of two more children. In the spring of 1970 they moved to Sioux Falls, SD where Bern began his twenty year career in management with Burroughs Corporation retiring in 1991.

His favorite saying about retirement was he got up with nothing to do and went to bed with a job well done. Nothing could be further from the truth. Bern led a very active life as a member of the Church of St. Mary, member and officer in Dakota Territory Gun Collecting Association, member of Sioux Empire Cartridge Collectors, trader on EBay, and a firm believer of completing a daily crossword puzzle, online jigsaw puzzle and online solitaire.

Grateful for sharing in his life are his wife, Teresa sons, Thomas(Patty), Omaha NE, Joseph, Sioux Falls, SD; daughters Anna, Mary(Andy), Sioux Falls, and Katherine, Lincoln, NE; 15 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; his brother Donald, and Ken(Mary). He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Steven; sisters Darlene and Helen, and a brother Paul Jr.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, October 14, 2022 at the Church of St. Mary (2109 S 5th Ave.) Family will be present from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, October 13, 2022 at Miller Funeral Home – Southside Chapel (7400 S Minnesota Ave.) with a wake service beginning at 7:00 pm.

We were so sorry to hear of Uncle Bern's passing. He was always good for a laugh as he loved to tease us, especially about politics, our weight and anything else he could think of. We always enjoyed our visits with him and Aunt Teresa even though that wasn't often enough. He was one of a kind!! Jenny and Ron Sheppard
