1932 - 2022
Patricia Ruth "Patti" Hilton Shumway quietly slipped away on December 4, 2022, two days short of her 90th birthday, surrounded physically and virtually by all nine of her children and other loved ones. Born December 6, 1932, in Oakland, California, where she was also raised, as the last child of eight and only girl of Eugene and Ruth Naomi Savage Hilton. Patti has always been a much-loved center of attention.
Studies started at Brigham Young University, led instead to a young man recently returned from a mission in Japan, the love of her life, Jesse Fredrick Shumway. Courtship, marriage in the Mesa Arizona Temple, and the highs and lows of life brought to them nine dearly beloved children: Jesse Fredrick Jr, Douglas Hilton, Daniel Glen, Eve Patricia, Samuel Smith, Andrew Eugene, Naomi Esther, Sally Elizabeth, and Mary Janette, all of whom survive their mother. At current count, 44 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, each cherished and loved, round out the family circle.
Ever inquisitive and full of questions, Patti was optimistic to a fault, and an instant friend to all. Focused from a young age on faith and family, she served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, when only 18, laboring in Scotland and Wales. This spirit of service continued throughout her life as she took on many church callings, proactively served friend and family through her healing arts, and in later years, filled three senior missions with her husband.
