Biography of a Great Father by Marivic Achaval

My beloved father was born and raised in Manila, Philippines. He was the firstborn son of a Spanish father and an American Filipina mother. As the eldest child, he was loving and protective of his two sisters and three brothers.

Since childhood, my dad played basketball and was considered a basketball superstar during his college years at the Far Eastern University, Philippines. All his life he was an avid basketball fan, so he never failed to watch NBA games on television, particularly Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls and Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers – his two favorite players.

One of my dad's endearing character traits was his great love for my mother, Ching! During courtship, he traveled every week from Manila to a far away province to visit and spend time with my mom. He loved to serenade her, brought her flowers, and relentlessly proved his love for her until he won her heart (and the hearts of her mother and three brothers).

My parents got married on December 12, 1954. They remained married for sixty-seven (67) years before dad passed away to be with his Creator on September 11, 2022.

I fondly recalled that every Valentine's Day, even up to the time that his memory was slowly failing, he would make sure that his beloved wife had red roses and a box of chocolates. He called my mom "My OAO" (One and Only)

As a father to his four children, Cheryl, Marites, John, and myself, I remember our dad to be very loving, protective, caring, and patient. Our parents raised us in a loving, nurturing, and safe home environment and encouraged a loving and close relationship with our extended family. Sundays were always spent attending Mass in our Catholic Church followed by family time. Good education was also instilled in our minds by our parents, and they thrived to support our dreams and aspirations in life.

My dad loved and adored his grandchildren, RJ, Nini, Toni, Tricia, and Tyra. He did not have the riches to shower them with a lot of gifts, but he made sure to let them know that they were all his pride and joy, and he unceasingly prayed for them.

On May 2022, I remembered how excited and happy my dad felt when he met his first great granddaughter, Addi, parents are Beej and Nini. Since then, their distance apart did not stop daddy to smile, laugh, and enjoy Addi's pictures, videos, and face time!

Before dad's passing, he expressed excitement to meet his second great granddaughter, Riley, parents are RJ and Em. Riley was just recently born and sadly dad was not able to meet her. One thing is for sure though, dad is now watching over Addi and Riley!

Dad, on behalf of Mom and my siblings, I would like to thank you for being the BEST husband to mom, and father to us 4! You've shown so much grace, love, faith, patience, perseverance, resiliency, and endurance as your health became challenging these past five years. You never gave up smiling, laughing, cracked us up with your silly jokes, and was always appreciative and grateful!

We could not thank God enough for blessing us, with a husband and father like you. It has been a joy seeing your handsome face every day, and a great blessing and privileged to love and take care of you until the very end! Rest in peace in your forever home in heaven!

Paalam daddy ko………until we meet again!
