On the 1851 census he was aged 73 and living in Newton Road, Turvey, next to the Garlick family. George Garlick, a son of that family, married Rebecca Simcoe, who was the daughter of John Paine's wife, Sarah from her first marriage. John is recorded as married, but his wife is not with him in 1851. Sarah is recorded as married, too, but is recorded on the census with the family to whom she was housekeeper. On the 1861 census he is said to be 83, and still a tailor. His wife is not with him then either, but both of them are recorded as being married. Sarah was living next door to her daughter, Rebecca in that census.
John died at the age of 84 and was buried on 2 January 1862. He probably died at the very end of 1861.
