OBITUARY:

Lyle Harrison Degelos, age 88, of Metairie, Louisiana passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 7, 2022, surrounded by his loving family at his side. Lyle was born in New Orleans on September 21, 1933. He is preceded in death by his parents, the late Adolph Pierre Degelos and Edith Adams Degelos, his beloved wife of 48 years, Elizabeth Ann Millet Degelos of Crowley, Louisiana, son, Jack R. Degelos, and his brother, Richard A. Degelos. He is survived by his children, Cynthia Degelos (Jay) Underwood of Metairie, Louisiana, Jeff (Tammy) Degelos of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Suzanne Degelos of Mobile, Alabama, four grandchildren, Madison Underwood, Taylor Underwood, Macie Degelos (Colt Johnasen), and Garrett (Dacee) Degelos; two great-grandchildren, Brynlee Johnasen and Rylan Johnasen and many nieces, nephews and family members who he held close to his heart. He is survived by two sisters who he loved dearly, Edith Degelos Catching and Carolyn Degelos Wanek (Robert E.) Treuting. Mr. Degelos grew up in New Orleans. He graduated from Isidore Newman High School in 1951. He then attended Tulane University where he received his Bachelors in Business Administration in 1955. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and the Air Force ROTC. He joined the United States Air Force after college and served in Korea and other areas of the Far East, as a pilot in the rank of First Lieutenant. After his discharge from active service in 1958, he served in the Air Force Reserve until 1972 receiving an Honorable Discharge as a Major in the United States Air Force Reserve. In 1958, he began his career as a business activist and entrepreneur with many successes and challenges in the agricultural, commodities, and restaurant fields. He was always a man of hope, optimism, tenacity, and determination, which was admired and respected by his family and friends. Those who knew him delighted in his dry wit and sense of humor. They appreciated his wise counsel and advice. He was a kind and generous man with a huge heart who would often give even out of his own lack. He was a man of strong will. He fought and survived three different cancers with strength and endurance and lived daily with and overcame several other illnesses and conditions. He fought and he lived with passion and purpose….his love for his family. His greatest fulfillment was his love for his family and friends and their love for him. The people who meant the most to him and made the greatest impact were: his father, Adolph Pierre Degelos who he admired and respected for his success in life, despite his limited education; his son-in-law Jay Underwood, for his love, generosity, and kindness when he welcomed him in his home where he closely observed and admired Jay's poise, tenacity and strong work ethic in supporting his family; his daughter, Cynthia for her focus, attention, and love in her caregiving, above and beyond; his son, Jeff for his kindness and love; his daughter Suzanne for her generous heart and continued support; his grandchildren, Madison, Taylor, Macie and Garrett for their kind love and attention; his great-grandchildren, Brynlee and Rylan for the joy they brought. Included also are his sisters, Carolyn, who he cherished and loved deeply and would not leave this world until she was by his side and Edith, whose visits he always enjoyed, sharing laughter and stories; seeing her were highlights to his week. Also of great importance to Lyle were some of his dearest friends who he described as: "his friend for life who could always be counted on", Donald Lee of New Orleans; "his life-long friend", Paul D. Kay of California "who always stood by his side"; "his life-long friend and hero", Colonel Richard C. Zeeck of New Mexico and Murray F. Cleveland, his friend and lawyer until his death. He will be remembered for so many things but mostly for his love for his family, his generous heart, his goodness and kindness, his dry sense of humor, the laughter he brought, and his encouragement, counsel, and availability to those who needed him. He will be deeply missed, more than words can say. His legacy of love left behind will be cherished forever. We will be looking for your "smiles from heaven". A Visitation for Lyle will be held Saturday, May 7, 2022, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Boulevard, Metairie, Louisiana.
