Dr. John J. Mahoney, 53 years old, associate dean of the Indiana University School of Medicine died yesterday in his home at 4933 East 70th Street. He was in failing health the last six months.

Dr. Mahoney, who was responsible for admissions programs and student loans, was known to thousands of students and alumni of the I.U. School of Medicine where he served as a faculty member and administrator since 1947.

His career was marked by his willingness to shoulder a variety of administrative tasks, his loyalty to the school and his warm but dry humor.

Dr. Mahoney's death is a great loss to us," Dr. Glenn W. Irwin, dean of the I.U. School of Medicine, said. "It is both a professional loss and a personal loss, which all of us associated with the school feel deeply. He was the special kind of person who helped significantly to give the school its character."

Dr. Mahoney was active in the school's alumni association, and one of his annual enthusiasms was to organize the spring alumni reunion under a large, traditional tent on the lawn adjoining the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children.

He also participated in the school's curriculum revision and modernization activities and served in a liaison capacity to state and county medical societies.

Born in Boone, Iowa, Dr. Mahoney earned B.A., M.A. and Ph. D. degrees at the State University of Iowa, completing studies in 1941. He served in the Sanitary Corps of the United States Army from 1942 to 1946, and was executive officer of an Army hospital.

He joined I.U. in 1947 after one year as an instructor of physiology at the University of Illinois. His first I.U. appointment was as assistant to the dean of the School of Medicine and instructor in experimental medicine.

Dr. Mahoney was promoted to assistant professor in 1948 and to associate professor in 1950. He became assistant dean of the school in 1951. In 1965, he was promoted to full professor and to associate dean.

He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the Association of American Medical Colleges, Sigma Xi, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Phi Delta Theta. He also was an honorary member of the I.U. Alumni Association.

Graveside services will be private.

Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Katherine L. Mahoney; two sons, John R. and Stephen J. Mahoney, both of Indianapolis; a sister, Mrs. Mary Fleming of Council Bluffs, Ia.; and three brothers, William M. Mahoney of Clark, N.J., Robert E. Mahoney of Boone, Ia., and Thomas J. Mahoney of Illinois.
