CIVIL WAR VETERAN, PRIVATE, CO. D, 6TH MICHIGAN INFANTRY

Thomas Jefferson Overmyer served in Co. D of the 6th Michigan infantry along with his brother-in-law Peter Dorr. He was taken prisoner at Tunica Bayou, Louisiana, Nov. 8, 1863, and sent to the notorious Andersonville Prison where he died of scorbutus Aug. 6, 1864. His name was misspelled in various records and only recently has he been properly identified and rightfully restored with honor to the remembrance of his Overmyer family relatives.
