George Dixon married Highly Mildred Williams (nee Blackburn) 18 Jul 1851, Fountain County, Indiana. [His widow's name is spelled various ways, e.g., Heley, Hily, Hilla.]

In the 1860 census of Logan Township, Fountain County, Indiana. Post Office: Attica. His occupation was Brickmaker. They were the parents of five children in that census: George, Margaret, Mark, John, and Mary.

He enlisted 13 Aug 1862 in Company C 86th Indiana Infantry. He was captured by the enemy 19 Jan 1865. After release, and on his way home on the riverboat Steamer Sultana, he died when the boilers exploded killing most of the passengers.

His widow, Hiley M. Dixon, filed for a Widow's pension 10 July 1865. Four children received Minor's pensions; George, b. 9 Jul 1853; Margaret, b. 3 Feb 1855; Mark, b. 14 Jun 1857; and Mary, b. 3 Mar 1860.

His widow, "Heley", was living with the four children in Ward 2, Lafayette, Tippecanoe County, Indiana, in the 1870 census. She was running a boarding house, George was working for the railroad, and Maggie was in school.
