SYLVIA DROSDAHL Sylvia Rose Drosdahl, Oct. 26, 1924 - March 21, 2007, 82, loving and devoted wife to Arnet, her husband of 57 years; mother to daughter, Donna Gonzales and son, Jim, both of Las Vegas; grandmother to Danny, Dawna, Gary and Michael; great-grandmother to Joshua, Sierra and Matthew, passed away quietly in her sleep, March 21, at 1:07 a.m. Sylvia was the oldest of 10 children born to John Randel and Georgia Ann Gholson, born on the family farm in Hamilton County, Southern Illinois near Broughton. The family soon relocated to nearby O'Possum Creek, where Sylvia attended a one-room school house on land her father donated adjacent to the family farm. Sylvia enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944, and was stationed at Mare Island, Calif., where she met Arnet, then a chief Hospital Corpsman also in the U.S. Navy. They married at San Bruno, Calif., April 21, 1946, and Sylvia was honorably discharged shortly thereafter. She and Arnet proceeded to raise three wonderful children as they traveled the globe from base to base. The family finally put down roots when Arnet retired at Lake Mead Navy Base, Las Vegas in 1962, after 22 years of military service. She was an active member of the congregation at Nellis Air Force Base Chapel, and her passions were church, her family, playing bingo and traveling. Those who had the good fortune to know her could appreciate her bright sense of humor and strong will to survive as she battled numerous ailments in recent years. Although she will be greatly missed, she is now at peace and free of worldly ills in God's hands. She was preceded in death by husband, Arnet; son, Gary; brothers, John Thomas Gholson, Joseph Randel Gholson, Dickie Donald Gholson; and sister, Elsie Roenia Auxier. She is survived by daughter, Donna Gonzales of Las Vegas; son, Jim Drosdahl of Las Vegas; brothers, James Lee Gholson of Carmi, Ill., Charles Arthur Gholson of McLeansboro, Ill., Jerry Pearce Gholson of Evansville, Ind.; and sisters, Alice Annette Webb of McLeansboro, Ill., and Elizabeth Hazel Neal of Marion, Ill. Visitation will be from noon-2 p.m. Saturday, March 24, with memorial service to follow, both at Palm Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St.
