Margie Austin Gibson
June 17, 1936 - November 21, 2022
Anderson, South Carolina
Margie Austin Gibson, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and teacher, died peacefully at Martha Franks Retirement Community on Monday, November 21, 2022. She was 86.
Born in Moncks Corner, SC, she was the daughter of the late Willis W. and Rebecca DeHay Austin. Margie was a graduate of North Greenville College and Furman University. She was an elementary school teacher for 35 years, teaching most of her career at Varennes Elementary School in Anderson. She was a leader in the Polio Support Group of Greenville, South Carolina, and was a survivor of polio. Margie also served as a church musician and leader alongside her husband, Rev. Richard Gibson, at several churches.
Margie had a special way of pouring love into all of the lives around her. She loved, nurtured, and gave her heart and time to every person, batch of bread, and rose bush in her garden. Her greatest love was her family, which was never limited by blood. Her passions included singing in the choir, gardening, and hosting loved ones. Her faith and family defined her life, and every person she met can attest that she modeled a life of service, hospitality, and compassion for everyone.
She is survived by Rev. Richard Gibson, her husband of nearly 65 years; three daughters, Monica Rich (Jim), Melanie Wilson (Steve), and Renee Turner (Johnnie); six grandchildren, Annie Thompson (Luke), Joshua Rich, Andrew Wilson (Megan), Jennifer Wilson, Rebecca Wilson, Jessica Griffin (Tyler); one great-grandson, Heath Griffin; three step-grandchildren Julia Cardamone (Pierce), Robyn Turner, and Brad Turner (Lindsey); one step-great-grandson, Riley Turner; sister, Mary Austin Wylie; sisters-in-law, Barbara Austin and Fran Austin, and "adopted" grandson Bryson Bouknight.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Justin Trotter; brothers, Jervey Austin, and Willis Austin, Jr.; sister, Genevieve Austin; and a half-brother, Hugo Austin.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 3, at Boulevard Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Austin Carty. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. A committal service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, December 2, at Sand Hill Cemetery in Varnville, SC.
