BARDSTOWN - HOFFMAN, GEORGE NORMAN, January 29, 1921 - January 17, 2014 of Bardstown, KY died just hours after his beloved wife Viola, at Nazareth Home in Louisville. George was born on January 29, 1921 in Louisville, KY to George F. and Anna Mae (Sandman) Hoffman. He graduated from St. Xavier High School and attended the University of Louisville. He joined the United States Coast Guard and served until the end of World War II. On July 24, 1943 he married Viola Florence Schuler at Holy Trinity Church, St. Matthews, KY. They resided in St. Matthews until 1954 when he established Hoffman Distributing Company. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church and was active in Optimist Club, Knights of Columbus and Chamber of Commerce. George was the former chairman of the board of Bethlehem High School and Flaget Hospital and longtime Bardstown City Council member. Besides being involved in civic activities he sponsored and supported numerous local sports programs. His interest included the Quarterback Club and playing golf. He was an avid U of L Football and basketball fan. He had a fierce loyalty to Notre Dame football having attended his first home game in South Bend, IN in 1937. He is survived by daughters Kathy (Woody) Hahn, Hodgenville, KY, Carolyn (Chet) Miller, Littleton, CO, Mary (Alex) Hamilton, Louisville and Virginia (Ginna) Schroeder, St. Louis, MO; 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Martha Eve and brother Don Hoffman. Visitation will be: Monday January 20, 2014 from 3-8:00 p.m. at Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home, Bardstown. Funeral will be Tuesday January 21, 2014, 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Basilica, Bardstown. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery Bardstown. In lieu of flowers donation may be made to: St. Joseph Basilica or Bethlehem High School.
