Pvt. Allison enlisted age 32 at Summerville as a Private in (1st) Company "I", 6th South Carolina Infantry on 10 June 1861. After that regiment was disbanded in early 1862, he enlisted as a Private in Company "M" (the "Ordnance Guards"), Palmetto Sharpshooters (a/k/a "Jenkin's Regiment," a/k/a the "1st Palmetto Sharpshooters") on 1 May 1862.

He died of disease at the "South Carolina Hospital" in Manchester (then an independent city, now part of the City of Richmond). His grave is unmarked. (NOTE: His name appears as "J. R. Allerson" in Hospital records.)
