James Cox and Erie Sims Cox were expecting a child when she became sick with pneumonia during the influenza epidemic of 1918 and died in childbirth. James gave the baby to their daughter, Lona Cox Garrison, who had a baby nine days old and said, "If you want to nurse them both, you will have twins." However, the baby died after a few days.
