GRATIOT, Wis. -- Marvin E. Meier, 80, of Gratiot, died on Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at the University of Wisconsin Hospital, Madison, Wis.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Warren, Ill., with Pastor Margo Peterson officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Warren. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Bartell-Leamon Funeral Home, Warren,

He was born on May 20, 1927, in Gratiot Township, Lafayette County, son of Otto F. and Ruth R. (Fiedler) Meier. He graduated from the Warren High School class of 1944. He started farming with his father in Lafayette County in Gratiot and Monticello Townships.

He married Eula Jean Lindon on June 29, 1957, at the United Methodist Church, Rochelle, Ill. After their marriage, they moved to Apple River, Ill., for two years, then moved to the family farm where they raised their children and continued to live. Marvin retired in 1992, but continued to be active on the farm his entire life.

Marvin was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Warren, where he held multiple offices within the church. He served with the Apple River Fire Department, and was a member of the Apple River Lions Club for 50 years. He was a long-standing board member and chairman of Monticello Township. He gave many years of service to the Agricultural, Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. He was a sales representative for Dekalb Seed Corn.

He enjoyed fast and slow pitch softball, playing with the Apple River American Legion team. He also bowled for many years in the Stockton league. Throughout his life, Marvin was very dedicated to his family, friends and community. His kindness and support will be dearly missed.

Surviving are his wife, Eula Jean, of Gratiot; a daughter, Ruth Ann (Ken) Johns, of Gainesville, Va.; a son, James (Allison Vanover) Meier, of Madison, two grandsons, Jacob Glenn Johns, of Gainesville, VA and David James Meier, of Madison, Wis. two brothers, Kenneth (Charlotte) Meier, of Apple River, Ill., and Gerald (Penny) Meier, of Albany, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Doris Quakenbush.
