Jesse Earl Godfrey, a noble, gracious servant of Our Savior, passed away on Sunday, November 13, 2022, at the home of Scott and Sarah Godfrey, his son and daughter-in-law who provided such sweet and tender care for him during the last year of his life.

Jesse was born at his childhood Ogden, Utah home on September 10, 1925, to Wonda William and Hattie Eleanor (Hutchings) Godfrey. He was the eldest of their eight children. Jesse loved Ogden and attended Loren Farr Elementary, Central Junior High, and Ogden High schools.

At age seventeen, Jesse enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp. He was called to active duty one month after his eighteenth birthday and assigned to be a gunner on the B-29 bomber through the end of WWII and, again during the Korean War, for one year. Later, he earned his B. S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Utah.

MARRIED: Margie J. Reyns
DATE: June 18, 1947
PLACE: Salt Lake Temple

After his military service ended in 1953, Jesse and Margie settled in Bountiful, Utah where their children were raised. Previously, they had lived in Oak Lawn, Illinois, Beaconsfield, England and Gerrards Cross, England due to Jesse's employment. In each place, they opportunities to serve others and make lasting friendships.

Jesse was a stalwart member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His was a deep and abiding testimony of the truthfulness of the gospel. Jesse was one who the Lord could trust to do whatever was asked. He served faithfully in various callings throughout his life. As a patriarch, he had enjoyed the opportunity to pronounce blessings (including for some of his grandchildren). As a temple sealer, he'd had the privilege of sealing many couples (again, including many of his grandchildren to their spouses). And he and Margie had been Church Service Missionaries in St. Helens, England. Additionally, Jesse gave many years of quiet service to his neighbors, friends and family and truly epitomized ministering. He was an excellent example of being a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ.

Jesse enjoyed children. Being a child of the Great Depression and not having much candy, he always had "a little something sweet" in his pocket to share with them.

Jesse was a self-taught woodcarver. He created beautiful works of art -- many of which depicted his love of nature and his Savior, Jesus Christ. Jesse generously shared his talent by crafting handmade wooden toys for family and friends.

Jesse was predeceased by his sweet Margie, his parents, five siblings, and two grandsons.

Left to cherish his memory are his four children: Carol (Jim) Brande, of Sandy, Utah; David J. (Kimberlee) Godfrey, of Bountiful; Roxanne (Greg) Glenn, of Calgary, Canada; and Scott R. (Sarah) Godfrey, of Kaysville, Utah; along with twenty-five grandchildren, seventy great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Jesse's family thanks the members of the Bountiful 41st and Columbia Heights wards for their loving care shown him after the passing of his wife.

In lieu of flowers, Jesse's family suggests contributions be made in his name to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Humanitarian Services.
