Captain Thomas Waller signed young George into the Confederate Cavalry at Jumping Hollow on 5 March 1862. Waller was the Captain of Company A of the Ninth Regiment of Virginia Cavalry, the Stafford Rangers. George accepted a fifty dollar bounty in exchange for a three year commitment. In 1863 and 1864 he took some time off without leave, but both times was soon back.
