"Alan F. Cerniglia, 44, died Wednesday in his residence. Mr. Cerniglia was born in Niskayuna and lived in Troy most of his life. He was a graduate of St. Joseph's School and LaSalle Institute and attended Albany Business College. He once worked for the Troy Public Works Department. At the time of his death, Mr. Cerniglia was a captain in the Troy Fire Department, working out of Station 4. He became a firefighter in 1972 and was made a lieutenant in 1980. Mr. Cerniglia was named captain in 1985. He also was a former paramedic for the Fire Department. Prior to that, Mr. Cerniglia worked for the Troy Public Utilities Department for several years and was believed to be Troy's first water meter reader. Mr. Cerniglia was a member of the Uniformed Firefighters Association and served as its past vice president. He also was a member of the Disabled Veterans of America. Mr. Cerniglia was a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War, serving as a corporal. He received two Purple Hearts. Mr. Cerniglia is survived by his wife, Patricia E. Baker Cerniglia; a son, Vincent Michael Cerniglia of Troy; a daughter, Reena Marie Cerniglia of Troy; and a brother, Bernie T. Cerniglia of Nevato, Calif. Services will be held at 8:45 a.m. Saturday in the John H. Clinton Funeral Home, Washington Park and Third Street, and at 9:30 a.m. in St. Peter's Church. Burial will be in Memory's Garden, Colonie.
