Drury Leander SIMMONS

•Event: Military Service Jioned the Union forces at Knoxville, TN on 6/11/1864, Co., A, 3rd Regt, for 3 yrs, NC Lit. Inf. Volunteers, til 8/8/1865. He drew pension of $12.00/month.

•Event: Per family members, Leander and his son Henry, who was 16 yrs at the time, went to go pick apples on some property that he owned in Carrollton, and Leander became ill and died. Medical

•Note:
On the 1844 Tax Roll, of McDowell Co., NC. it listed Leander Simmons.Accordingly to a testimony written by Fletcher White in 1972, Leander and Polly lived in Yancy Co., NC., during the Civil War (1861-1865). Leander volunteered to join the Union as a member of the Calvary. When the war ended, he returned home and began operating a still, which was legal

l. He put this liquor in five-gallon kegs, and delivered it to Saltville, VA. His means of transporation was a wagon pulled by four mules. He bought salt there and distributed it to people along the way. Salt was hard to get in those days. He left North Carolina for Tennessee. He settled on Rock Creek, where he bought a large farm. He also eventually bought a large farm on South Indian Creek. There he operated a sawmill.

He decided to go to Missouri and sold his farm to Mr. Jim Riddle and Mr White. He homsteaded 160 arces in Missouri and began to follow the lumber business. Finally, he moved to Carrollton, AR, where he died.

He is buried at the Carrollton Cemetery, where the government provided him a grave maker in 1972.
Per family members,

Leander Simmons, Marvel Simmons and Jim Jimeson, were living very close together, likely in sight of each other. Leander was sort of taking care of the older gentlemen. Supposedly, Marvel is buried nearby and he died sometime after the 1860 census.
