MR JAMES A SHANAHAN
Sincere regret was felt when it became known that Mr James A (Boy) Shanahan passed away at his home in Rochester last Thursday evening, at the early age of 38 years.
The deceased, who was born in Moama, was the second son of Mr and Mrs James Shanahan, of that town, and was well known in sporting circles, he having played with theEchuca football team In the Goulburn Valley League. He was also a member of the Moama Cricket Club, and the Moama Fire Brigade.
Some years ago he removed to Rochester, where he conducted a saddlery business in Moore street, and later on the Strand Picture Theatre; but of recent years he retired from
all business.
When the Rochester Citizen's Band was first formed, he was one of the playing members, and later he became drum major, president, secretary, and committeeman respectively. He was also a committeeman of the Rochester Football Club for many years, and a representative of the Fire Brigade. He was always a good supporter of any worthy local
movement which gained him the respect of a very large circle of friends.
His health has been bad for some little time, and he was finally confined to his bed with a complaint for which there could be no cure, and, as stated above, his death took place on Thursday evening. Deceased leaves a wife and a young family of six children to mourn the loss of a good husband and affectionate father. He was a brother of Edward (Melb)
Bride (Mrs T. Ryan), George (Sydney), May (Mrs Cantwell, decd.), and Greta (Moama).
The funeral took place to the Rochester Cemetery on Friday, where members of the local band, Fire Brigade, Rochester Football Club, and H.A.C.B.S. marched at the head of the long procession. The Rev. Father Bolger conducted the burial service and the coffin, which was covered with beautiful wreaths, was borne to the graveside by Messrs Mertens and Barrass (Football Club representatives), Bottoms and Vickers (band) and Firmer and Doyle (Fire Brigade).
