Walker Farm School Follow-up
By Dave Curtis

"In the May/June 2011 "Canton Historical Society Newsletter" I asked if anyone knew anything about the Walker Farm School. I have since found the following in the "Detroit Free Press" dated April 15, 1922:

"Mrs. Cora Gosney filed suit in circuit court asking $25,000 in damages from Perry Walker and Eliza W. Walker for alleged reasons that her 13 year old daughter had been mistreated by employees of the institution.

"Her daughter Wilma was a pupil and boarder at the school. She had been placed at the school June 21, 1921. Her mother had a rooming house in Detroit and thought life in the country would benefit Wilma's health.

"Laura and Harry Bales (sic) were the actual heads of the school. Laura Bales was the daughter of Perry and Eliza Walker. At the time of the lawsuit Mr. and Mrs. Walker had nothing to do with the school. About 1916 they moved off the farm to Detroit. The Bales rented the house and started the school. The children did a large amount of the farm work and Mr. and Mrs. Bales did the rest.

"The school was started by Mr. and Mrs. Bales and her sister Martha Walker. During World War I, Mr. Bales enlisted and served two years. Martha died and this left the home in the hands of Mrs. Bales. When her husband returned she collapsed and spent nearly a year in the hospital, recovering from nervous prostration. She has since all but closed the school, with only four boys remaining.

"The school was on the accredited list of the county school commissioner and a teacher, who was a college graduate, was constantly employed.

"I have been unable to find the results of the Circuit Court case as to if guilt was determined. In looking at the "Plymouth Mail" newspaper from January 1, 1922 thru June 30, 1922 nothing was found about this case."
