Goodnight Sweet Prince; and Flights of Angels Sing Thee to Thy Rest.
-William Shakespeare, Hamlet

Troy Allen Dunlap
Troy Allen Dunlap, beloved son, brother, husband, father and grandfather left us on July 5, 2022 in Portland, Oregon. He passed away at home, surrounded by familiar things and dear memories of his wife Nora, whom he lost on August 20, 2021. Troy was 60 years old.
Troy was born on September 26, 1961 in Portland Oregon, the youngest son of John S. Dunlap and Carol S. Williams. From the beginning, Troy was a bright light in our family, sensitive, funny, mischievous, and exceptionally beautiful to look at. He was the perfect example of what a little boy should be; fast as quicksilver, curious, busy and tempestuous. He was loved from his first breath.
He was the smallest in stature, and he learned at an early age to protect himself, studying boxing all through his early youth. He was a fine musician, a percussionist, and he had a marked talent for singing as well. He also dabbled in the arts, and some of his pen and ink drawings were truly fine. As a young boy his sensitivity would show in wonderful ways. A fine example was when his sister Rebecca was very ill and he was unable to visit her sickroom, he sat under her open window and sang to her for hours at a time.
As an adult, he was always quite modest about his talents and was self-depreciating to the extreme. He was also able to recognize events before they happened-a trait he shared with his sister Rebecca. He had a legendary sense of humor, often failing entirely to stay serious when it was most required. In years to come this famous sense of humor and his love of pranks will certainly be remembered and talked about by the entire family. He had a deep and abiding love for his mother, and her loss was a true calamity to him. Indeed loss was very difficult for Troy.
He enjoyed fishing, working in his yard and spending time with special family and friends. He believed that this time was not to be wasted or treated carelessly, and whether it was by design or not, he left the individuals with whom he spent time a sense of fun, friendship and family. He loved the Beatles, Wings, Peter Paul and Mary, and Wings percussionist Denny Seiwell.
The day that changed Troy forever happened July 18, 1987. On this day in Portland Oregon, Troy married his one true love Eleanor Rose Bessich. Theirs was an inspiring union, and to that union came the birth of their beautiful daughter Julianna Marie on June 1 1989 in Clackamas, Oregon. Troy's pride in his daughter knew no bounds and was all the more effective because it was deserved. Julianna was a source of joy and happiness to Troy and Nora always. Indeed, Julianna grew up with the best traits of both of her parents, and is one of the most beautiful women in our family. She is a pleasure and a source of pride to us all.
On July 23, 2011 Julianna married Brandon Dutton and on October 8, 2015 their daughter Brooklyn Grace was born. Brooklyn was a new source of joy for Troy and Nora. Then came William Troy on August 1, 2019. It was wonderful that both Troy and Nora were able to know their grandchildren and Nora especially was quite simply over the moon when she became a grandmother.
Nora had suffered with ALS for many years, and Troy took care of her with unfailing love and the deepest of devotion. She was without a doubt, most courageous and accepting of her illness, and she took great joy in living among beloved family members and true friends. We all miss her terribly, and Troy struggled to sustain the loss of her most of all.
When Nora passed away on August 20, 2021, Troy began to give up. The loss of his wife was simply too much. Everyone in the family reached out to him, their messages full of love and understanding, but Troy just could not go on without her. It is the opinion of many in the family that Troy quite simply died of a broken heart.
Troy is survived by his father John Dunlap, brother Darrell Dunlap (Mary), sister Rebecca Dunlap-Maxwell and sister Dorothy Shaffer (Chris). Troy is also survived by his daughter Julianna Dutton (Brandon), Nora's parents and his grandchildren Brooklyn and William. Troy was preceded in death by his wife Nora, his mother Sue, and his brother Larry.
When I think of Troy, I think of sunny fishing days, when the sky was an arcing blue bowl above us and the very trees shimmered. I remember Troy jumping with wild abandon into the rivers of our youth and singing to us when he had swam to the other side. I think of wild pranks, and believe me the more he loved you the worse the prank, and just this morning I heard his voice. I ran outside, remembered, and smiling through my tears, I said goodbye to Troy, and I let him go.
Jesus promises us that we will all be together again in our Father's House, and all one can do until that happy time is to offer up a prayer for Troy's soul. Maya Angelou said that "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away." So we say goodbye to Troy, and to Nora who are together on a new journey, and we thank God that they are well at last.
We say goodbye to Troy.
Whom we have loved.
