CEDAR FALLS -- Mary J. Rathbone, 91, of Cedar Falls, died Monday, Dec. 29, at UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital in Waterloo. She was born Oct. 6, 1923, in Frederika, daughter of Claude and Amelia Ebert Carroll. She married Wayne Rathbone, and he preceded her in death on May 2, 1997.

She graduated from Frederika High School and served in the Women's Army Corps. She was employed with the US Census Bureau, the University of Iowa, and Iowa State University as an interviewer and data collector and also worked at election polls.

Survived by: a son, Clay (Kim); two daughters, Merry Kay Backes and Julie (Rocky) Samek; nine grandchildren, Julie Wurzer, David Bohringer, Bridget Brown, Candyce Duffy, Zane Samek, Kate Samek, Zach Rathbone, Haylee Rathbone and Olivia Rathbone; 10 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Preceded in death by: a son, Winston; a daughter, Claudia Sandquist; a grandson, Winston McKay; and a son-in-law, Jerry Backes.

Services: 4 p.m. today at NewAldaya Lifescapes Chapel in Cedar Falls, with visitation for an hour before the service. Richardson Funeral Service is assisting the family.
