Jane L. Murray, 78, formerly of Groton, passed away on Friday October 7, 2022. Jane lived in Shirley since 2005.

Jane was born in Lawrence, MA on June 30, 1944 to Constance (Bunten) Murray Whitney and Edison C. Murray. She grew up in Lawrence, MA, Manchester, NH, and Andover, MA before moving to Groton where she spent most of her life.

She is survived by three siblings: Jeffrey P. Murray of Amherst, NH, Stephen Murray of Hollis, NH, and Ruth Ellen Whitney of Litchfield, NH, as well as three nieces and nephews: Alison Murray of New York City, NY, Eric Kelly of Newmarket, NH, and Katherine Jane Kelly of Stoneham, MA, a step-sister: Martha (Whitney) Davis of Nashua, NH, and her step-brother's wife: Barbara Whitney of St. Simons, GA. She was predeceased by her step-brother Richard Whitney and her brother Brian Murray, who passed away at a young age in 1949.

Jane spent most of her career at Ayer Oil Co., formerly May and Haley Fuels. She was also well known in the community as Park Commissioner of Groton for over 15 years.

She loved horses and harness racing, an interest that was spurred by her mother's and stepfather's (H. Dudley Whitney) love of training and racing harness horses at the Groton Fairgrounds. She even purchased two horses of her own, Heidi and Sunny. She is survived by her last beloved companion, a Welsh Terrier named Reagan.

Another one of her passions was collecting antiques and going to the Brimfield Fair to expand her collection. She also had fond memories of boating on Lake Winnipesaukee, where her family owned a cabin on Bear Island.

Visiting hours will be held in the McGaffigan Family Funeral Home, 37 Main St. (Rte. 113) Pepperell, MA on Saturday, October 15th from 10 - 12 p.m. immediately followed by procession to Groton Cemetery where Jane will be laid to rest.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Shirley Council on Aging, 9 Parker Road, Shirley, MA 01464 or to Making Opportunity Count (www.mocinc.org) in Jane's honor.
