Renee Anderson Allen
August 1920 - January 2022
Resident of Alameda, CA
Elsie Irene Anderson was born and raised on a farm in Wisconsin to Matti (Kyronlahti) Anderson and Pieta Maria Sippola who immigrated from Finland. Her childhood was filled with Finnish culture, family, and nature surrounding her. She left the family farm to make her way in the world and soon started to go by her middle name 'Rene', which friends insisted on making into the name Renee. Good natured, she went with it, and thus she was known.
Renee was a go-getter and creative person, hardworking and smart. Her early accomplishments included winning first prize for her letter to the nationally syndicated newspaper column Young America on December 22, 1940. During 1947, she ran a national touring play for Empire Producing Company, traveling coast to coast to small towns advertising, casting, and directing. Later she taught dance at Arthur Murray (specializing in Latin dances), worked at WTMJ television during the infancy of television, and also spent some time at the Milwaukee Sentinel newspaper. During the early 1950s, she was an assistant to the head of the Alumnae Office at Newcomb-Tulane University.
It was at Tulane University that Renee earned a BA in Psychology and also met her husband Bain, a career military officer, who she married in 1953. Though she applied and was accepted to the graduate programs for experimental psychology at UC Berkeley and UCLA, she instead chose to be a dedicated Navy wife who moved with her husband's assignments. This allowed her to find friendships with other military wives and build great relationships with neighbors. She dedicated her life to husband, children, and friends which were always a part of her life.
They settled in Alameda upon her husband's retirement. Renee continued to be an aspiring writer who submitted stories seeking publication. She was a skilled artist and longtime member of the Alameda Art Association, with a sizable catalog of seventy years of work. This included watercolors, wood blocks, and other mediums. Even in her last months Renee wished she could get a job and contribute more to society. She was always looking to do more with her life.
Renee was mother to four, Bain Jr., Jon, Glen, and Mari and also grandmother to Julian, Nicole, Benjamin, and Jackson. She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, six older siblings and some dear friends.
We will all miss her voice of support, reason, and encouragement to reach for the stars.
