Orphaned at age 13 when his father died, mother having died at his age of 10, he was left with a younger brother. When he turned 18 he left and migrated to the United States landing in Boston and making his way to a aunts house in Orange, NJ. Working in a hat making factory by 1890 he had made his way to Santa Barbara with friends spending the winter there. Going back to the British Isles in 1892, he returned to California ending up in Redlands were he had friends. Working in the Orange industry by the time he was in Redlands for 10 years he ran for County Supervisor, losing by a short margin.
In 1905 he bought out C.R.Vesper in the undertaking firm of Vesper and Dow, which then became Dow and Fitzsimmons.
Married to Nellie Louise Tague in June of 1895.

Helen Fitzsimmons Smith(1899-1953)

In 1917 Mrs. Fitzsimmons died. On Sept 4, 1919 he married Mrs.Louise Gordon at Coronado.
