Mildred Capps Austin passed away Monday, October 17, 2022, after a period of declining health. Mildred was born on May 15, 1926 in Madison County, to the late William Riley Capps and Ollie Cody Capps. She lived her entire life in Madison and Buncombe counties. She graduated from Walnut High School and moved to Asheville shortly after, where she lived with her sisters in West Asheville and worked at the Asheville Hosiery Mill.

In March of 1947, she married James Leonard Austin and remained happily married for 64 years. Mildred took a "summer" job at Square D Corporation and retired after 26 years. Following retirement, she worked a variety of other jobs. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and sewing. She made many 'pillowcase' dresses for charity boxes in recent years and probably knitted hundreds of dishcloths. She was an avid gardener and always had a jar of green beans to share.

In 2015, Mildred moved to a retirement community where she lived independently for five years. She has resided in assisted living since January 2021. She was a loyal member of West Asheville Baptist Church.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard; sisters, Virginia Towe, Meryl Coggins and Kathleen Capps. She is survived by her son, Vernon Austin (Joan) of Ocean Breeze, FL; daughter, Dianna Attaway (Steve) of Hendersonville, NC; brother, Robert Capps of Asheville, NC; granddaughter, Desiree Clonch (Chris) of Palm City, FL; grandsons, Wes Attaway (Melanie) of West Chicago, IL and Matt Attaway (Lindsay) of Issaquah, WA; great-grandchildren, Charlee Clonch, Austin, Josiah, Samantha and Seth Attaway.

The family wishes to thank her friends and caregivers in the Ardenwoods community for their love and care for her in these last seven years.

The funeral service will be held at West Asheville Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 20, with visitation prior from 10-11 AM. Interment at Forest Lawn Memorial Park immediately after the service.
