Jayden Andrews-Howland would have celebrated his 15th birthday the day after the February earthquake. He was an only child to Helen Andrews and John Howland. The Linwood College pupil left school early on February 22 and was on a bus heading home when he was killed by falling masonry on Colombo St. His father said Jayden was "very caring and honest". Jayden was still very much a child when he died, and he enjoyed playing his PlayStation and riding his bike, he said. His mother described Jayden as a "quiet, kind and loyal person". "He would do anything for anybody and he didn't judge anybody but always accepted them for who they were." The family had planned to spend his 15th birthday together. The cheeky face of comic character Bart Simpson adorned the service sheet at his funeral. Grieving family members described him as having a big heart and an infectious smile. He loved to travel and dreamed of becoming a driver when he left school. He had a dream of wanting to buy a campervan and travel around New Zealand, his parents said. One of his former teachers said he was a diligent pupil who was a "quiet, gracious and humble" role model for other pupils in his class.
