U S Army WW II VeteranWITTES Homer H. Homer H. Wittes, 87 years, of Waterville, Ohio died Wednesday, February 6, 2008, in the Arbors at Waterville Care Center, Waterville, Ohio. Born in Neapolis, Ohio on January 5, 1921, he was the son of Harvey Wittes and Hattie Barnett Wittes. Homer retired from the Anthony Wayne Schools in 1982, and was previously employed over the years by Waterville Appliance Company, Toledo Appliance Company, The Village of Waterville, and Toledo Scale. Homer served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army during WW II, and was an member of Waterville Post # 463, American Legion. He was also a Member of Waterville First Presbyterian Church, served 31 years on the Waterville Volunteer Fire Department, and was a founder and past treasurer of the Anthony Wayne Merchant's Bowling League. Surviving are his son, Gregory W. Wittes of Waterville, OH; his 3 sisters, Wilma Martin and Mary (Darwin) Longstreet, both of Waterville, OH, and Joan Abney of Riverside, CA and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Eleanor Longstreet Wittes; his brothers, Burton and Bill Wittes and his sisters, Margaret Ehrgood, June Woodling, Lucy Fish, Norma Cox, and Arna Hall. Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday in The Wells Funeral Home, Waterville, Ohio, where services will be held on Saturday, at 11 a.m. February 9, 2008, with Rev. Deb Smelser of Waterville First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens, Waterville, Ohio. The family suggests that tributes take the form of contributions to Waterville First Presbyterian Church.
