Valentin Theobald Simon, son of Barbara Simon, was born on 1 July 1820 on Mount Kalmit in the Haardt Mtn range of the Pfälzerwald (Palatinate Forest) of southwestern Germany when it was part of Bayern (the Kingdom of Bavaria) in a small town called Frankenstein. The next day, 2 July 1820, in the neighboring town through the woods of Weidenthal, 2.5km southeast of Frankenstein, Valentin was baptized Evangelisch (translates to Protestant (not "Evangelical" as the word means in English)). Only his mother is listed on his birth and baptism record, and later when he wed. On 31 December 1845, at the left foot of the mountains, in Hochspeyer (6.6km west of Frankenstein) Valentin Simon was married to Luise Lang of Hochspeyer, daughter of Johannes Lang & Barbara Werner. (Sometimes they're referenced as being from Fischbach, which is technically a separate village, but Fischbach and Hochspeyer run in to one another at the left side slope of Mount Kalmit. Most villages/towns on the plain are separated by 2-5km of vineyards in between.) When the couple wed, Valentin was 25 & Luise was 19. They lived in Hochspeyer. (Today the town is under the administrative district of Kaiserslautern, federal state of Rheinland-Pfalz, democratic country of Germany. Kaiserslautern is a major city, 12km due west of Hochspeyer.) There, Valentin & Luise had at least five known children, beginning 10 months after their wedding, with a child born every 3-4 years for 13 years until 1859. The year after the youngest, Valentin Simon died prematurely at only 39 years old, on 12 February 1860 in Hochspeyer, where he was buried in the cemetery on 14 February 1860. The grave marker is no longer there as is typical for recycling of plots after 30yrs at a time, and usually reused by the next generation of the same family. But church records indicate that is where he was laid to rest.
