John B. (Bill) Lane, 95, of Roanoke, Va., and Hickory, N.C., passed away peacefully, on Sunday, October 16, 2016, at Kingston Residence of Hickory. Bill was born on February 24, 1921, in Carthage, Ill. He was a son of the late Hiley Columbus Lane and Alia Cooper Lane. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Iva Miller; and brothers, Rockford Lane and Warren Lane. Bill attended National Business College where he met Etta, his future wife. He was a World War II veteran of the United States Army Air Forces where he served as a cryptographic technician. After World War II, Bill had a career working at the Veterans Administration. Bill is survived by his wife of 69 years, Etta Mayfield Lane of the home; two daughters, Janet Low of Burke, Va., Nancy Genovese and husband, Mike, of Newton, N.C.; two grandchildren, Lindsay Low Leahy and husband, Paul, of Alexandria, Va., and Mark Becker and fiancée, Megan Rutherford of Indianapolis, Ind.; a sister, Gladys Goodwin and husband, Bob, of Roanoke, Va.; and a sister-in-law, Elsie Mayfield of Vinton, Va. The family would like to thank the staff at Kingston Residence and Catawba Regional Hospice for the continuous support they provided. A service to Celebrate Bill's Life will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 21, 2016, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel in Virginia with the Rev. Charles Krause officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem, Va. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Catawba Regional Hospice, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658 (828-466- 0466).
