Was a member of Galilee Baptist Church. Attended Bowling Green Business College and was later employed by Lampton Mercantile Co., Magnolia, Miss., and was manager of the Magnolia Oil Mill. In 1905, he became a partner in W. L. Robinson Lumber Co. in Gloster. In 1913 he was employed by the National Lumber and Tile Co., and also was partner in the Gloster Gin Co. until October, 1936, when he became active superintendent. On Jan. 4, 1937, he became superintendent of the Gloster Light and Water Plant and held this position until his retirement in 1959. Was president of the Amite Bank from 1914 to 1942. Was a member of the Gloster School Board from 1908 until 1912. Was a city alderman continuously from 1916 until 1936.
Brown Funeral Home in Gloster in charge of arrangements. Services at 11 a.m. Thursday at Galilee Baptist Church in Gloster.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Ethel Faust Bates; three sons, William C. Bates, of Little Rock, Ark., Samuel Lyle Bates of Jackson, Miss., and Omar R. Bates, Houston, Tex.; one daughter, Mrs. A. M. Allen, Baton Rouge; four grandchildren, William Ellison Bates, Samuel Lyle Bates Jr., Martha Wade Bates and Ann Robinson Bates; two sisters, Mrs. Julia Brumfield, Gloster, and Mrs. Helen Whittington, Summit, Miss., and one brother, J. L. Bates, Baton Rouge.
