William Baylor was one of the founding members of the West Augusta Guard, a militia organization based in Augusta County, Virginia.
Col. Baylor commanded the 5th Virginia Infantry in the Stonewall Brigade. He was commanding the brigade at the battle of Second Manassas when he was struck down rallying his men.
