DOROTHY FORSTMANN SAMMIS - a lifelong resident of Greenwich, died February 24, 2007 in her home at the age of 96, surrounded by her family. She was born Dorothy Anne Mercadante, the daughter of the late Joseph and Marie Saitta Mercadante, on December 10th 1910, in New York. She attended the Ursuline School in Larchmont, Briarcliff High School and Sarah Lawrence College. She married Julius George Forstmann and moved to Greenwich over 65 years ago to raise their six children, J. Anthony Forstmann, Theodore J. Forstmann, John F. Forstmann, Marina Forstmann Day, Nicholas C. Forstmann, and Elissa Forstmann Moran.

Dorothy was a devoted Roman Catholic and parishioner of St. Michael The Archangel Parish. She was a renowned bridge player, and a long-term member of The Regency Whisk Club. Dorothy was an avid tennis player who was playing at the Field Club into her 90's.

She served for many years on the board of The Catholic Center for the Blind, Briarcliff College, and was president of the Carl Forstmann Foundation. She supported Greenwich Hospital and a variety of community organizations.

Dorothy was widowed and in 1965 married the late Jesse F. Sammis Jr.

She is survived by 5 children, 19 grandchildren and 15 great grand children.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, February 27, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Michael's R.C. Church, 460 North Street, Greenwich. Internment is private. Friends may call at the home of Mrs. Forstmann Sammis from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, February 26. Memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Nick at www.friendsofnick.org
