Luttrell, Norman K.

Norman K. Luttrell May 15, 1919 - Feb. 1, 2008 Norman Kester Luttrell (88) was born in Denlow, Missouri on May 15, 1919. He passed from this life peacefully on February 1, 2008. The son of Jacob and Susie Luttrell, Norman was the seventh of eight children. Norman was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Doris in 2003. She was his constant companion and the light of his life. Norman is survived by his four children: Janice Holder and husband, George; Patricia Byrne and husband, Robert; Norma McDonald and husband, Curtis; John Luttrell and wife, Marian; 15 grandchildren; numerous great and great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his younger brother, Jake Luttrell. Norman began his teaching career in the Ozarks. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII where he loved teaching special classes for illiterate soldiers. He graduated with a Bachelor-of-Science degree from Central Missouri State College using his GI bill. He later received a Master's degree from the former Fresno State College. He moved the family to California in 1948 and taught in Inyokern and Ridgecrest, CA and was principal of Inyokern School. In 1952 he began his 21-year career in the Lamont School District, and retired as District Superintendent in 1973. He always said his favorite assignment was the two years he spent as what he called "hooky cop" where he went to the homes and interacted with the families. He never stopped loving the children and the families in Lamont. After retiring from the field of education and not being one to stand still, he managed the Sierra Christian Service Camp at Balance Rock, worked for the Kern County Welfare Department, Kern Medical Center and lastly, Flashco (where he went to help his son-in-law George for two months, and was finally permitted to leave after 5 years). He was a dedicated educator, but he could also do and fix almost anything - and loved doing it. Norman and his family spent many vacations in Missouri on the farm with Doris' family. After Doris' passing, her family continued to call and visit. They truly loved Norman and provided him with many happy hours. Norman lost most of his eyesight to macular degeneration in 1993. Even so, he enjoyed his independence, his canine companion Rusty, his garden, visiting with family, his church family, neighbors, and the breakfast group at Southwest Lanes. He loved to read by listening to books provided by the Braille Society. The family wants to acknowledge the helpfulness of the Meals On Wheels program and especially wants to recognize and thank the staff at Oakdale Heights Senior Living where Norman enjoyed his final months and found renewed joy, and to Hoffmann Hospice for their aid and comfort near the end. Services will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. and the funeral on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. The family suggests Hoffman Hospice for anyone wishing to make a charitable contribution in Norman's behalf.
