Carl C. Bechtol, 86, of 229 Eaton Ave., Eaton, died Saturday evening, June 11, at his home. Born July 12, 1907, in Preble County, he was the son of Leander Robert and Amila (Coy) Bechtol. He was co-owner/operator of Bechtol's Grocery on North Barron Street for 46 years until the store closed in 1998. He served 17 years on the Eaton Volunteer Fire Department and eight years as a city councilman.

Mr. Bechtol was preceded in death by wife of 66 years, Grace M. (Brown) Bechtol, on June 7; three brothers, William Zachariah Bechtol, in 1901, Clifford Frederick Bechtol, in 1984, and Robert Pearl Bechtol, in 1988; four sisters, Mary Carmel Morrow, in 1946, Elvina May parks, in 1976, Bertha Belle Pitsinger, in 1979, and Edith Amila Root, in 1987; two grandchildren, Harold James Bechtol, in 1948, and Beverly Lee Bechtol, in 1949; and two great-grandchildren, Kari VanEpps and Jason Brawn.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald E. and Phyllis J. Bechtol of Cave Creek, Ariz., Carl M. and Patty J. Bechtol Sr. of Eaton; eight grandchildren, Jane Ann Bechtol, Gerald Joseph Bechtol, Susan Barre, Carl M. Bechtol, Jr., Beth Marie Soule, Ruth Margaret Leighton, Deborah Faye Murray and Robert Lee Bechtol; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 16 at Memorial Baptist Church, Eaton, with the Rev. Lowell T. Spencer officiating. Burial will be in Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, at Barnes Funeral Home – Eaton Chapel and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society-Preble County Unit or to the Memorial Baptist Church Building Fund.
