Rev. Dr. Richard Armstrong and Clarissa (Chapman) Armstrong were missionaries in the Hawaiian Islands from 1831 to 1848. He was appointed minister of public instruction in 1848, and chiefly built up the 500 free public schools of that kingdom, besides fostering several higher institutions.

They were the parents of Samuel Chapman Armstrong, who founded Hampton Institute (now Hampton University).
