Lela J. Bond Patterson, 96, a retired North Carolina public school teacher, died June 4, 1998, at Guardian Care of Ahoskie. Mrs. Patterson's teaching experience included service in Pitt and Edgecombe counties for over 35 years and in Hertford County, retiring from Robert L. Vann High School in 1970. In addition to her teaching job, she served as treasurer for the schools' Parent Teacher Association for over 30 years.
She received a bachelor of science degree from Elizabeth City State University. Mrs. Patterson was born in Bertie County, but lived in Ahoskie for more than 50 years.
In 1954 and 1960, she traveled extensively in Europe. Her travels included cities in France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Switzerland and Austria and Italy.
Mrs. Patterson was the widow of the Rev. R.H. Patterson, who pastored New Ahoskie Baptist Church for 27 years.
Survivors include Wilhelmina Lasley of Mitchellville, Md.; retired Col. George Patterson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Eva B. Ward of Windsor, N.C.; and four sisters-in-law.
A funeral service was held Wednesday, June 10, 1998, at 1 p.m. in New Ahoskie Baptist Church. Reynolds Funeral Home handled arrangements.
