Lucille H. Mortland, 91, passed away Tuesday, April 13, 2004 in Midlothian, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sheldon "Buck" Mortland.

Her daughter, Jeanette M. Cooper and husband Lyle Jr. of Midlothian, Virginia; grandson: Lyle "Bucky" Cooper III of Richmond, Virginia; granddaughter: Jennifer C. Rafols and husband, George; great-granddaughters: Hannah and Haley Rafols of Cary, North Carolin; and sister: Maxine Hendrickson of Alton, Illinois survive her.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and six sisters.

Mrs. Mortland was born in Streator, Illinois and graduated from Streator High School. She received a teaching degree for Illinois Normal College and taught school in Streator. She and her family moved to Durham, North Carolina in 1944, and relocated to England and Italy from 1949 to 1952, returning then to Durham. She was a member of Duke Memorial United Methodist Church for over 50 years, and was very active in the church with the women's circles and the Altar Guild. She was a weekly volunteer at the Durham Veterans Hospital for over 25 years, and a member of Hope Valley Country Club. Mrs. Mortland moved from Croasdaile Methodist Retirement Village in Durham to Brandermill Woods Retirement Village in Midlothian in 2002. Her greatest devotions in life were to her husband, family and friends.

The family shall receive friends Thursday evening, April 15, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Howerton-Bryan Funeral Home in Durham. Services shall be at Duke Memorial United Methodist Church on Friday, April 16, 2004, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Maplewood Cemetery..
