MRS. LAURA ROGERS

One of the old, old timers of Hesper neighborhood has passed away. The funeral service of Aunt Laura Rogers, widow of the late George F. Rogers, was held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Friends Church at Hesper. The service being conducted by Rev. Thomas Williams.

The church was filled with relatives and friends who wished to pay their last respects to one held dear for scores and scores of years. The Hesper Friends church and burying ground adjoining on the east was a part of her holdings and is just a half mile from the home where she presided as wife and mother for almost 70 years. The burying ground is in plain view of the home.

Aunt "Laura" as she was known by everyone far and near, lived a beautiful life, patient, kind and gentle in all her ways. She won not only the admiration and respect of everyone, but their love as well.

In the highest and best sense she was truly one of God''s gentle-women.

Rev. Williams read the following obituary as part of the service:
Laura Maria Rogers nee Mendenhall, daughter of Johnathan and Phoebe Mendenhall, was born at Plainfield, Hendrick county, Ind., December 31, 1837 and departed this life at Lawrence, Kansas June 12, 1926, aged 88 years, five months and 11 days.

She was united in marriage with George F. Rogers, Oct. 15, 1856, according to the regulations of the Friends church of which they were devout members and for nearly 40 years they lived happily together until the union was broken by death of the husband on May 4, 1905. To this union were born four children, Mary Florence Henley of Bluejacket, Okla.; Georgiana Stanley, recently deceased; Horace M. Rogers, of Hesper and Melvin who died in childhood. She assisted in raising and educating two of her grandsons, Ben and Jesse Rogers. She has 13 grand- children and 14 great grandchildren.

In 1858, she with her husband moved to Hesper, Kans., where she spent the remainder of her life sharing with her neighbors the joys, trials and privations of pioneer life. Often opening her home to new settlers in the neighborhood, while they planned their home.

She was one of the charter members of the Hesper Friends Church, established in 1861 and was faithfully attending its services when health permitted.

Her quiet unassuming Christian character was an encouragement to her family and friends. When Hesper Academy was founded she and her husband were ready with money and influence for the prosecution of the enterprise.

In the fall of 1914 she went to live in the home of her daughter, and son-in-law, Georgiana and Samuel Stanley. Some six years before her death, she fell and broke her hip, from which she never fully recovered. During these years of suffering she was under the ever watchful, loving care of the faithful daughter, with whom she made her home, until a short time before she passed away when she was deprived of this care by her daughters death.
