Richard Henry Henkel died peacefully Friday, February 1, 2008 in St. Vincent Hospice at Indianapolis, Indiana lovingly cared for by his family. He was 89.

Dick Henkel was born August 19, 1918 in Oshkosh, Wiconsin to Abigail Dodd Henkel and Henry A. Henkel.

During WWII he served in the Philippines with the Army Signal Corps. Like many of his generation, Dick's greatest legacy to his children was a life lived with self-sacrifice, stoicism and service to others.

Dick worked 36 years for the Marathon Paper division of American Can Co., moving to Indianapolis in 1963 to open a sales office. In high school Dick discovered a passion for theatre and continued as both actor and director in community theatre throughout his life. He and Marge enjoyed working together in productions in Oshkosh and Neenah, WI and in Winston-Salem, NC. In Indianapolis Dick played Kris Kringle in "Here's Love" and Henry Higgins in "My Fair Lady" with the former Edyvean Repertory Theatre at CTS. He also appeared at Indianapolis Civic Theatre in "Life with Father" and "The Gin Game." Dick was an active member and past president of The Players and The Portfolio. A member of St. Luke Catholic Church, Mr. Henkel served on the Parish Council. His generosity extended to the St. Luke conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, of which he was a founding member.

Of all his accomplishments, Dick was proudest of the large and loving family he shared with Margery, his wife of 58 years. She preceded him in death in 2006, as did eldest son David in 2007.

Service was Monday, February 4th at St. Luke Catholic Church with a Mass of Christian Burial.

Interment was in the Henkel family plot in Riverside Cemetery in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society or to St. Luke Catholic Church.

Arrangements and cremation have been entrusted to the Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel, 740 E. 86th Street, Indianapolis.
