John Calvin Thorne died on Friday, September 9, 2022, surrounded by his family. Born October 17, 1930, he grew up in Columbia, attended Schneider School and Hand Junior High then McCallie School in Chattanooga and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a BS degree. He served in the US Navy during the Korean conflict. He worked for WIS Radio then founded Blair-Thorne Advertising Agency in 1959. He moved to Myrtle Beach in 1964 and developed South Carolina's first cable television facility, later moved to Virginia Beach and developed cable television in the Hampton Roads area, then to Atlanta where he led a group competing for cable television franchises throughout the United States. In 1981 he returned to South Carolina joining Cosmos Broadcasting Company, retiring in 1990 and returning to Columbia. From 1990 until 1995 he worked as an international management consultant in the United States, Europe and Asia.
He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Katharine Frost Fulmer Thorne, his parents, Robert Eugene and Martha Bailey Thorne, and his sister Elizabeth Thorne Beerman. He is survived by four children; Katharine Thorne Carter, John Calvin Thorne III, (Mary Bett), Roland Edward Fulmer Thorne (Karen) of Irving, Texas and Lucille Frost Thorne, eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren.
He was a member of St. Martin's-in-the-Fields. While in Myrtle Beach he served on many business, civic and charitable boards and as president of the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce and co-founder of the Horry County United Way. He was a member of The Columbia Cotillion Club, The Quadrille Club, Pine Tree Hunt Club, having served as president of each club, and a former member of Forest Lake Country Club, The Flamenco Club and The Tarantella Club.
A graveside service will be at the family mausoleum at Elmwood Cemetery on Tuesday, September 13, 2022 at 2:00 in the afternoon. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
