Ruby was the second of nine children born to homesteaders Fred and Mabel Briggs in Elwood, South Dakota. She walked 1 ½ miles to a one room grade school and then went to high school in midland about 50 miles away. She cared for kids and did homework to pay her room and board and graduated in 1931. she attended Northern Normal School in Aberdeen and taught grades 1-8 at the North Carlin School from 1932 to 1935.
While attending summer school in 1934 she met George Smith, a young Nebraskan. They married in 1936 and drove to the west coast. They lived in Oregon, Washington, and California and had 2 sons. When George got work at the Oregon Shipyards in Portland, they bought a house in Gresham. When WWII ended, George took a job with the Department of Army Civilians in Germany. They divorced in January 1948.
In the summer of 1948 Ruby met the love of her life, Todd Morgan. They were married at the home of their minister on Christmas Eve in 1951 and moved to Silverton, Oregon. Todd worked at the Laborers' Union in Salem and Ruby was a stay at home mom until 1959 when she accepted a position with the Oregon Employment Department where she worked until 1974 when she and Todd retired. For the next 15 years she and Todd took daily walks in Silverton, volunteered and toured extensively throughout the United States. Todd died in 1990.
Ruby was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church and was an active volunteer for many years in the church in Silverton
Ruby is survived by sons Don (DeAnn) Smith of Salem, Oregon, John (Carmen) Smith of Mandeville, Louisiana; sister Ruth Neuhauser of Pierre, South Dakota, and brothers Fred (Veda) Briggs of Aldie, Virginia and Earl Briggs of Rapid City, South Dakota. She has five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at the Silverton United Methodist Church at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 30, 2013, interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Silverton United Methodist Church. Arrangements by Unger Funeral Chapel."
