RAY F. DEBRUHL

Ray Franklin DeBruhl went to be with his lord and savior on August 30, 2022.He was a devoted family man and a devout Christian.
Ray was born in Union SC on May 25, 1933 to the late Jesse Hampton DeBruhl and Madora (Dora) Crawford DeBruhl.
Ray graduated from Union High School in 1952. He married his High School sweetheart, Shirley Vaughn on September 11, 1954.
He graduated from Mars Hill Junior College in 1953. Then he went to the University of South Carolina where he graduated in 1956 with a BS degree in Civil Engineering.
In June 1956, Ray was drafted into the Army. He was stationed at the Army Map Service in Washington DC. Ray and Shirley moved to Alexandria, Virginia in 1957.
In 1969, Ray began his career at North Carolina State University as a Civil Engineer Extension Specialist. He enjoyed teaching engineering to his students for 12 years. One of his favorite accomplishments was overseeing the construction of the NCSU Solar House which is opened to the general public to encourage energy conservation at home. Ray traveled to Saudi Arabia with other NCSU colleagues to tour major construction projects and developed a manual on construction management.
In 1981, Ray was appointed as the State Construction Officer for NC, overseeing all capital improvement projects for state buildings. His last and most meaningful job was serving as the Building Consultant for the Johnston County School System in NC for 10 years. He prided himself on developing a prototype school that saved time and money.
Ray retired in 2002. He worked for 45 years in the construction industry with 25 years devoted to public service and 20 years in the private sector. Ray was a public servant at heart with a strong work ethic. He loved to be involved in the planning process, designing process and developing a vision for the future.
He enjoyed sports, playing football and baseball in high school and at Mars Hill Jr. College. He was an avid NCSU Wolfpack fan and loved going to the football and basketball games with his wife, Shirley.
Ray and Shirley enjoyed traveling, shopping for collectibles and spending time with their family.
Ray was a man of deep faith and a devoted member of the First Baptist Church in Cary. He was a Sunday school teacher, a deacon, choir member and sang in a gospel Quartet. Ray lived a life of service to his God, family and community. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Vaughn and his daughters, Robin DeBruhl of Cary, NC and Dede DeBruhl of Winston-Salem, NC. Ray was predeceased by 3 brothers, Carson DeBruhl, Reese DeBruhl and Alonzo DeBruhl.
The funeral service will be held on September 10th at 11:00 am at Tabernacle Baptist Church (915 Pinckney St) in Union, SC 29379. The burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens (1720 Whitmire Hwy) in Union SC 29379. COVID guidelines for wearing masks is encouraged.
