Nellie Eleanor Luckey was born in Rio Vista, California in 1868, to Isaac Thomas and Eliza Jane Taylor Luckey. The Luckey's moved to the Vernal area in 1882. It took them over a year to make the trek as they herded cows 800 miles. Nellie and her little brother had to help. She was twelve years old. William Powell and Isaac became good friends and William and Nellie became acquainted.

Nellie Eleanor married William Swinford Powell, son of Charles Kelly and Elizabeth Ann Ellington POWELL, on 1 Feb 1887 in Vernal. They lived in a big one room house William had built out of cottonwood logs. He built more rooms as the family grew. They had five children, Minnie Eleanor, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Ann, John "Johnny" Asahel William "Bud" Swinford and Nellie Elaine.

Nellie knew horses and could handle them as well as a man. She did horse trading with the Indians who frequently traveled by their homestead.

In 1902, William bought 200 acres of ranchland on the Green River in Jensen. Early in 1907, Eleanor and William S. POWELL were divorced and within the next thirty plus years, Nellie married four other husbands: John Harper, Frank Fairchild, George Emory Stone, and Erastus Savage.

She married John HARPER on 23 Aug 1907. John died 4 Jun 1910 in Jensen, Utah. She then married Francis "Frank" FAIRCHILD on 12 Sep 1910. The 1920 Census for Bernalillo, New Mexico shows Nellie and Francis. George Emery STONE was Nellie's husband some time during the late 1920's. He died and she then married Erastus "Doc" SAVAGE, a well-known veterinarian from Colorado in about 1930. Doc died in Deep Creek, Colorado on 12 Feb 1943.

Some husbands died and one took all her money, but William helped her when she was ill or down and out. He always made sure she had a place to live.

According to her grandson, Nellie never was happy after she divorced William. The 1910 census for Uintah County indicates that her sons John, William and daughter Nellie were living with her and John Harper.

She was known to many to the grand children as "Grandma Savage" Her first husband William died in Jensen, Utah on 23 Jun 1923 and Nellie died in Vernal, Utah on 23 Nov 1952.

After the divorce, Nellie married four other husbands: John Harper, Frank Fairchild, George Emory Stone, and Erastus Savage. Some husbands died and one took all her money, but William helped her when she was ill or down and out. He always made sure she had a place to live.
