Jane L. Turner passed away on December 25, 2007 shortly following her 90th birthday in Baltimore, MD. Mrs. Turner lived in Holladay, Utah from 1970 to 1993 and moved to Wooster, Ohio and finally Baltimore, Maryland where she lived near her son and daughter-in-law. Jane Ellis Greenlee was born in Gary, Indiana in 1917. She received her Bachelor of Science from Butler College in 1938 and married Lowell Fry Turner in 1940. For nearly 50 years, Jane and Lowell created a partnership raising their family, starting new adventures and traveling to many unusual parts of the world where they became committed to promoting peace through better understanding. The Turners organized many "friendship tours" to the former Soviet Union from their home in Salt Lake. Jane Turner, along with her husband and former Mayor Palmer DePaulis established the Salt Lake City Sister City program with Chernovtsy, Ukraine in 1989. Monuments honoring the Turner's efforts to build a foundation of friendship throughout this region and the world are located in the Salt Lake City Peace Garden, the Gallivan Center and in, Chernovtsy Ukraine. Jane continued to travel extensively after her husband's death in 1989. She eventually visited 107 countries and seven continents reaching Antarctica in her 80th year.
Surviving are Molly Turner, Sandy, UT; Nancy DeGraw (Cliff), Holladay, UT; and Charles Turner (Nancy) of Baltimore, MD. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A celebration of her life will be held at 1pm, January 12th at Holladay United Church of Christ, 2631 Murray-Holladay Road, Holladay, UT. Gifts in celebration of Jane's life may be made to the Holladay United Church of Christ in Holladay, UT.
