Mrs. Montaigne was born on April 4, 1949 in Richmond, Virginia to James E. Allen and Nancy W. Allen. She graduated from Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia in 1971 with a degree in education. She later earned her master's degree in special education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro
Mrs. Montaigne taught for four decades at the elementary and middle school levels in North Carolina and Virginia, specializing in instructing of children with special needs. She taught in Rockingham and Guilford counties and was eventually awarded her National Board Certification. She was also a teacher on loan for North Carolina A & T State University for two years, conducting seminars on the instruction of special needs students.
A resident of Reidsville for 36 years, Mrs. Montaigne was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Reidsville, where she served on the vestry and altar guild and was a member of the Episcopal Church Women. She was an avid cook, reader, and traveler, and loved to spend time at the family condominium in North Myrtle Beach.
Mrs. Montaigne is survived by her husband of 46 years, Gerald Montaigne III; her son, Gerald Montaigne IV and his wife, Missy Montaigne; her brother and sister-in-law, James E. and Bonnie Allen; her sister, Christy Harmon; two step granddaughters; and one step great-grandson. She was pre-deceased by her parents.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM on Wednesday, August 22 at the Citty Funeral Home, 308 Lindsey St., Reidsville. A memorial service will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, August 23 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 315 Lindsey St., Reidsville.
Inurnment will be in the church columbarium.
