Rev. William McCall RS
Born 1766 on Lynche's Creek, near Society Hill, SC. to Charles McCall and Celete Ann Williams,
William joined Gen. Marion in 1782 at 16 years of age. He moved with his parents to Georgia after the war. Received a Land Grant, apparently joining that of his father in Effingham (now Bulloch) Co. He was baptized into the membership of Welsh Neck Baptist Church in his youth and was ordained a Baptist Minister in 1789, at age 23, and became one of the most prominent preachers of Screven County. He was also a wealthy farmer, owning in 1796 over 1000 acres in Effingham, Screven, and Bulloch. In1805 , he paid taxes on over 2000 acres. His grant, signed Jan. 24, 1791 specified 200 acres bounded on the SW by the Great Ogeechee River, SE by Walter Kelly's land, and on all other sides vacant. Mr. McCall served several years as Moderator of the Hephzibah Baptist Association and pastored many churches in his section prior to his death. He was Justice of the Peace, 36th District, Screven County, being first commissioned 20 Aug 1804 and again on 12 May 1808.
He married (1) 1789, Ann (Nancy) Fletcher, b. 1767 in the Cheraw District, S.C., daughter of William Fletcher, RS. They lived in Bulloch County until 1793. She died in Screven County in 1796. He married (2) 1800, in Screven County, Mary Pearce, daughter of Joshua Pearce, RS. She died about 1830. He died Jan. 12, 1830. William and Mary are said to be buried in the family burying ground on "the plantation" in Screven County (McCall-Tidwell). These graves have not been found, but either his grave or his cenotaph is in Middle Ground Cemetery, next to his son, Moses Nathaniel McCall. The stone bears no dates, and in death, he carries the rank of Colonel.
(Note: McCall-Tidwell calls him a Revolutionary soldier, the DAR Patriot Index of 1990 lists him as "Pvt. S.C.", and militia pay records document his service at 72 days. DAR membership policy rejects applications through his line, but the problem seems not to be his service record, or that of his father, Charles. Rather, it seems to be in documenting the parentage of his son, Moses Nathaniel. However, a biographical sketch of Moses in History of the Baptist Denomination in Georgia, published in 1881, four years before his death, clearly identifies William as the father of Moses.)
Children of William McCall and Ann Fletcher: George Robert Francis (mar. Luvincia Fain), Moses Nathaniel (mar. Caroline Griner, Catherine Porter Dopson), William d.y.
Children of William McCall and Mary Pearce: Joshua William Pearce (mar. Mary __Boyn), John G. , Sarah
