Mr. Lloyd Bentley Cummins, 94 died Wednesday, August 17th at his home in Kodak, Tennessee. He was born April 2, 1928, to Joe and Nancy Sowder Cummins, in Mount Vernon, KY. The fourth of eight children, he was raised in Renfro Valley near Mt. Vernon, where at the age of 11, he started his first job at the Renfro Valley Lodge and Restaurant. He continued to work at Renfro Valley throughout his teenage years and met his wife Betty Foley there in 1947. The two were married in 1948. Bentley worked in automobile sales with several dealers, including his wife's uncle Clarence "Cotton" Foley in Berea. Mr. Cummins was a lifetime member of the Berea Masonic Lodge # 617 and was a member of the Berea City Council in the early 1960s.

In 1968, Bentley and Betty moved their family from Berea to Junction City, KS to open their first of five Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants. Recognized as one of KFC's top franchisees, he was selected to serve on the KFC National Franchisee Advisory Council for several years in the 70's. The Cumminses were also active members of the Kansas Republican Party in the late 70's and early 80's. Mr. Cummins served as a Delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1981, and traveled to Detroit to cast his state's nomination vote for Ronald Reagan, Bentley and Betty later attended President Reagan's inauguration in Washington DC. They were involved with several local charities in Junction City, and helped forge long lasting positive relationships with other businesses and the military leadership at nearby US Army base Fort Riley. Bentley and Betty remained in the KFC business until 1984, when they sold the business to devote time to travel, and eventually relocated back to Kentucky for retirement.

Mr. Cummins is preceded in death by his wife of forty-two years, Betty Foley Cummins, who passed away in 1990; his parents Joe and Nancy Sowder Cummins; four brothers; and two sisters. He is survived by one daughter, Charlotte J. (Rex) Hunter of Donelson, TN; two sons, Clyde Foley (Kat) Cummins and Patrick Bentley Cummins, both of Kodak, TN; and one brother, Glen W. Cummins of Nicholasville, KY. He was blessed with seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Cummins will be conducted Tuesday, August 23 at 1:00 PM at the Dowell & Martin Funeral Home Chapel by Revs. Kent Loveday, Johnny Delashmit, and Allen Livingood. Entombment will follow in the Berea Cemetery.
